Most Notable Update: Kitchen Islands
NEC Section 210.52(c)(3)
In a nutshell, kitchen island receptacles are no longer permitted to be installed on the sides of an island or peninsula due to safety concerns. Although the 2023 NEC doesn’t specifically state you cannot install a receptacle below, the code only permits these receptacles to be installed in one of three manners:
- Receptacles can be installed on the countertop itself.
- Receptacles can be installed above the surface; 20 inches or less.
- If no receptacle is installed, a future provision must be provided for installation at a later date.
